Ever wonder where the word "Donut" came from?

The Dutch are credited with bringing donuts to the U.S. in the 1800s. They were first called “olykoeks”, or oily cakes. Apparently, the world of marketing hadn’t become important. Not exactly a drool-inducing name. It’s OK….they taste good.

donut-mini-doughnutWashington Irving's reference to "doughnuts" in 1809 in his History of New York is more commonly cited as the first written recording of the term. Irving described "balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog's fat, and called doughnuts, or olykoeks."
